Katrina...

It's September 1st, 2005. It's been 5 days since we've spoken to my in-laws. They've lived in New Orleans all their life, and when we talked with them on Sunday afternoon, they had no intention of leaving. Their home is now under 10'-20' of water in Arabi, in the St. Bernard Parish. We know that one of my husband's sisters had made it out, and is in Mississippi. Mom, Dad and Sister Sue are still (presumably) holed up in Sue's 2nd-story apartment on State St. in Uptown. I know they filled the bathtub with water, but Mom is diabetic and Dad is on medication, so we can only hope for the best. The good news is, Sue is a nurse, so the parents are in good hands if there IS a medical problem.

My niece-in-law, Eve (Hi Eve!) is from New Orleans as well, but her dad and his wife have managed to make it out before the storm hit, and are safe. Our Eve (being the smart gal she is, married my nephew and live in Missouri now, sure, it's tornado country, but at least she'll be dry!)

There is something to be said for maybe TOO much media coverage. I can't stop watching the news, trying to see Sue's apartment, hoping to see familiar faces or landmarks.
I also wonder why in the HELL anyone would stay in New Orleans when they know the potential of the hurricanes. You can always rebuild your house, you can't get your life back. I also have to wonder if the people who are in the 'big muddy' have any idea how much the people outside are worried sick.

I am glad that I have photos and great memories of New Orleans, and hope that someday it will be back to the New Orleans that we remember.

All we can do is pray for the people that are still there, and hope for the best.

That's all there is for now, I'll post more when news comes in.

Jeanna
