Family FOUND!!!
OK folks, sorry it's been a little while. It's been a long 2 days. Apparently, we had some miscommunication about our family in New Orleans. Thursday/Friday, Earl Sr, Evelyn (Earl's mom) and sister Sue were picked up by a boat from Sue's Uptown 2nd story apartment. (Sue's noted that she had just bought her first new car on Friday and on Monday a tree had fallen on it, making it completely undrivable, but it's completely underwater now anyway so...)
The boat dropped the off at the local police station, where the police told them that the couldn't stay, but to wait in the back out on the outside patio. They slept in lawn chairs, until the police took pity on them and brought them some ice and some Gumbo that one of the locals had brought to the boys in blue... They then were taken and dropped off at the dreaded Convention Center, where they said that it was "hell on Earth" and didn't want to get into details, but if you've been watching the news, you know what happened there. They said that they had saved each others lives several times, and just wanted out!
Then they went by helicopter to someplace else (it is still coming out in pieces as I'm sure they're just in a state of shock) and taken in by a nice 'host family' just outside of Shrieveport LA. Dad didn't have his meds for 7 days as he had run out 2 days before the storm had hit and didn't get to the pharmacy. They are now all getting their meds and seem to be a bit better.
I think it will take them a while to realise that the only things they own are the clothes on their backs, and they're pretty danged lucky to have them!
Earl's cousin Butch was last heard from calling from atop his home saying that bodies were floating by, and that the water didn't come in a slow rise, but a huge wave as the levy broke near St. Bernard Parish. We're still not sure where he is, or is he's still alive. Apparently, Earl's mom talked with someone from the Parish, who said that a wave hit, people scrambled for their roofs, then another wave hit, knocking a lot of people into the water, the people on the roofs were helpless, only being able to watch their families being swept away.
I can't tell you how good it feels to know where at least part of the family is. My heart goes out to those who are still searching for loved ones. We can only hope and pray.
And onto my political rant. I have to talk about the response of the local Governor of LA, in her own words, I heard her talk about the evacuation plan that President Bush came to her with... She told him that she needed 24 HOURS to think about it.
How many people died in those 24 hours?
I'm not backing down on this one. People think that it was all Bush's fault. I do not. I'm tired of apologising for being more conservative than I used to be and I'm not going to apologise for becoming a Christian. You can't make fun of anyone with the exception of Christians and Conservatives. Everything else is taboo. Well, as usual, I'm going to take the controversial road.
I heard about Sean Penn getting in his boat to "save lives" and it sank. The more important part was the local who saw him with his personal camera man, and entourage, and yelled "how you going to fit anybody in there?" Point taken. He wanted the photo op, but didn't get the real scope of the problem. OK. I'll stop. I've got to run. More to talk about later.
Stay safe!
